A fun, quick trip into Chester Lake and above the Elephant rocks when the skiing wasn't looking too good or too safe anywhere else.
We did this hike on a cool and cloudy day and it was still worth it. We hiked it with 2 kids (10,12) and a small dog (6.5lb Pom). I've only done this route on skis in winter conditions (about a dozen or more times!) and so didn't know what to expect of it in the summer.
On December 24th, Jason Wilcox and I decided that it was time to give Alpine Ski Touring a try. What better place than the famous Burstall Pass deep in the heart of Kananaskis country and about the only place with enough snow left after days of extremely warm weather?
Buller was a very fun mountain. It isn't scrambled that often and there is no clear trail to the summit. Part of the scramble was bushwhacking and part of it was clear climbing on shitty scree and slab slopes. I'm really selling it eh?! :)
I started the scramble at around 9:00am and headed up the steep forested slopes above the drainage coming from the upper slopes. There was one truck already parked in the lot so I knew someone had already scared the wildlife for me! As I worked my way up the slopes I realized that I actually had quite a bit of energy.
