Sean and I did this scramble on a perfect scrambling day. The sun was out for some of the time, it snowed a bit, rained a bit and generally just did the mountain weather thing! We started off by parking on the wrong end of Bow River Dr. but eventually we found the right place and headed for the peak. After a long winter of no scrambling our heart rates went through the roof quite quickly!
On a early (0430) August 6 2005 morning, I joined Dave Stephens and Blair Piggot on a full day trip to scramble Mount Smuts and The Fist in Kananaskis Country. Blair and Dave do a lot of mountaineering and climbing trips together and every once in a while Dave manages to sucker Blair into a scramble.
On Saturday, May 15 I was joined by Wietse and Sonny on a bit of an exploratory trip in the Livingstone range in Kananaskis Country. We drove up an old logging road (start @N 50 5.522, W 114 25.942) with the intent of parking somewhere between Sheep Mountain and Horseshoe Ridge and bagging both summits from the parking area at the pass.
After hiking Hailstone Butte in a gale force wind (or 'Mach 2' wind as Gillean Daffern would put it) Wietse and I decided we would try to at least make our way to the bottom slopes of Sentinel Peak if nothing else to get some exercise and figure out the route.
If you're doing Sarrail as a day trip from the Upper Kananaskis Parking lot, you are in for a fairly long day. The hiking and scrambling are fairly easy though, so it's doable for fit and fast parties. We did this trip on our way into the Aster Lake area for a few days of peak bagging the Kane peaks.
On Sunday, November 18 2012 I joined Bill Kerr, Dave Salahub and Kevin Papke on a snow slog up an unnamed peak to the south of Isola. Dave decided to call the peak "S.O. Isola or Monola" in order to satisfy Kev's requirement of an 'official' summit. (Since then the peak has been named a more fitting name, Monola, due to it's location between Isola and Monad Peaks.)
Hanneke and I always look forward to the days that we get together in the hills. This one was a double bonus because we shipped the kids off on Friday night and attended a Christmas party! As you can see it was a very nice morning.
